Should A Think Tank Consider Educational Experience on the Application?

... what might be on that application if they decide they are an achieved individual with superb intellect and credentials? That's a good question, and as the coordinator for a think tank, a small one, which operates on online, I can tell you it's not an easy question. Not long ago, I was asked a question about our application process - Why don't you have educational experience as a question on the think tank application? That's a decent question and interestingly enough, I'd never considered it. So, I stated; regarding your question about "educational experience" - you do bring up a good ... realize there are some very intelligent folks behind the scenes advising decision makers in corporations, governments, and NGOs. Some of these groups call themselves Think Tanks, which is and ambiguous term in many regards, I mean what exactly is a Think Tank, does anyone really know, and does the dictionary really do the definition justice? Turns out the answer is no, no, they don't and no it doesn't. You see, there are so many different types of think tanks, many with specific agendas and mission statements, with so many different solutions to provide and stated objectives - you almost cannot categorize any one ...

The Too Brainy Stigma is Unhealthy for a Nation Which Wants to Innovate - Think Tank Topic

... stated; "However, ideas that I originally thought of when I was younger are now being created/researched by others after they have come up with them on their own." Yes, this is a common occurrence, happens to me all the time, sometimes I have projected my personal ideas using our think tank and then release the concepts into the wild (society, Internet, military tech industry, or scientific domain) and watched them take wings, not always but enough of them have to make me smile. Sometimes I get tired of acting stupid and taking about the weather, because if I want to talk ... in life. Worse, many students who may have considered going into a field of math or science, may choose not to because they don't want to be considered a nerd, and they'd like to have friends, or keep the friends they currently have. As the coordinator for a think tank which operates online, I often run across applicants who have always been quite intelligent but due to the perceived stigma, and the way they were treated, they spent a good bit of their time pretending not to be smart. We need these people in our society and civilization and we ...

Think Tank Question of the Week - How Do You Find This Stuff? Information Flow

... to know how to surf the Internet to find the information that one needs, you have to know where to look, and a little bit about the topic so that your searches come out with the right results. Last week, I was talking to an individual interested in joining our think tank, and we were discussing an esoteric topic having to do with the privatization of private space flight. He had some very good ideas, in fact his ideas were so good they had already been instituted by other individuals, and were being developed including prototypes as we spoke. To demonstrate this ...

Think Tanks Need to Be More Upfront About What They Do and What They Stand For

... , I suppose a left-leaning think tank would have signed them up in a heart-beat to help improve their numbers. However, it made sense for us to take a more ethical tact and so, I indicated; I'd like to mention that this is not any sort of a Global Warming Alarmist organization, nor is it an eco-Environmentalist activist think tank. We are not funded by socialists, Carbon Trading Scheme groups, the Democratic Party, or any far-left leaning groups. If that is what you are looking for, you might want to contact another group. Our Think Tank stands for free-market solutions, believes ... , underhanded, and lacks intellectual integrity and should make us question their studies, reports, and purported research as well. Not long ago, an applicant to our think tank put forth all of their credentials and beliefs. Each time there were statements of support for things like global warming, environmentalism, clean energy, etc, etc, even though they'd never participated in the any of the sciences or industries related to those sectors, and yet, I suppose a left-leaning think tank would have signed them up in a heart-beat to help improve their numbers. Think Tanks and Facebook - Are They Compatible?

... you need more examples, email me, but those two are pretty solid examples and they will keep your mind busy for hundreds of hours trying to debate what I just said, because in the end, you'll merely find yourself agreeing with my examples. The other day someone contacted our Think Tank and said that we should be on Facebook. I laughed because it sounded like the most ridiculous thing I'd ever heard of in my over 40-years here on the Planet. Nevertheless, if they could come up with a decent set of reasons, I'd consider listening to what ... Facebook turn out to be a good recruiting tool for a Think Tank? No, not necessarily, in fact, it might generally attract the exact opposite of the individual creative genius for just another consensus building human. We have plenty of those, folks who will give up their sense of self in order to belong. Anyone who'd give up their mind to the whole is no better than someone who'd agree to live in a society like that in the Movie Gattaca. No, I highly doubt that Facebook and a legitimate Think Tank are compatible, in fact, they may be exact opposites in ...

What On Earth Motivates Someone to Start a Think Tank?

... RAND Graduate Institute - Bulletin" - 1983 through 1984. If you will spend the time to study exactly what a think tank is, and historically how they've operated in the United States, I think you'll begin to understand exactly what it is they do, and how powerful some of these larger groups have become over the years. Running a little think tank is much different, but I suppose the objectives are often similar. Not long ago someone asked me, what the motivation was to start a think tank? And I replied; To Fix the World. They then asked; "What are your goals currently, and what do you ... learned while working as a coordinator for a think tank, one which happens to do most of its work on the Internet - is that folks are motivated to join a think tank or at least apply for a multitude of reasons. In fact, there are so many reasons and combinations of reasons, that I can honestly say now, there are almost as many reasons to sign up, as there are people. There is one more thing that shocked me about think tanks over the years, and that is they are all a little different. For instance there are think tanks which specialize in engineering, industry, third ...

The Car Wash Business Isn't Rocket Science - Or is it?

... 't run a think tank, because I don't have a Ph.D. in any of the hard sciences, or engineering. Amazing I thought to myself, of course, I knew where this was coming from, as this gentleman did have a Ph.D. and yet, he was surprised how much I knew about so many subjects which our think tank addresses. Again, I was a little taken aback when he said "your background is from the car washing sector, so why did you start a think tank? It doesn't make any sense, does the car washing industry really have anything to do with think tank research, innovation ... 't work that way. Of course, academics are just humans, like everyone else, so we shouldn't expect too much from them. It's just people sometimes think to be smart you have to go to school, it's not true, you learn more and faster by doing. Of course, you have to study everything in the sector to be good at any particular industry or endeavor, which is what I did. This is why merely having a PhD is not sufficient to join a think tank, and why there is a lot more to it than that. So, please consider all this.

Painters and Artists Have a New Worthy Competitor - Artificial Intelligence

... my clip-art photo, it would have been as good as his. See that point? AI wins again. Then I reminded the human trying to join our think tank that unfortunately, none of his ideas or concepts were original, plus the AI systems can do just as good making music, art, or making executive decisions using a decision matrix. Thus, he'll have to work harder if he wants to be good enough to join a think tank. Thus, humans better get used to pushing their minds harder, and really take it to the next level. Right now, we don't have AI CEOs ... happening right before us, but alas, the thought of AI becoming smarter, or more innovative that humans simply has not rung-a-bell yet. It's just too foreign to the average psyche. Let me give you a for instance. Not long ago, someone had contacted us to join our think tank, which operates online and their credentials were pretty decent; super high-IQ, computer programming experience, original music pieces, decent drawings and art, business experience, telecommunication knowledge, and plenty of other attributes and a fairly bulky resume. His artistic ability was pretty good and we got to talking about that. Indeed ...

... control and obsessive-compulsive disorder clinics, in a new book, Virtually You: The Dangerous Powers of the E-Personality." Indeed, this would be a great book to read, and perhaps it speaks to my own observations working at our think tank. We have a real problem out there. One thing I've noticed is when I asked questions of individuals, or what they think, they immediately go onto Google, and look at the subject, and e-mail back with their relative decision. What they don't seem to understand is that everyone in the world can do the same thing, and anyone who ... We have something of a major shift in our society right now with all the social networks like Twitter, and Facebook. Often people associate more with their online identities than their actual identities in the real world. As the coordinator for a think tank which operates online I'm beginning to see a rather troubling challenge which lies ahead. You see, when folks fill out their applications to join, they have all sorts of ideas, but they have no practical experience in the real world. They care very much about what's going on ...

13 Of Mankind's Greatest Challenges

... we - Smile this is a good day for human kind. Now then, not long ago, I was talking with an actor from Hollywood, a young gentleman who is quite talented, and he asked me, what are the problems we discuss at our think tank? Well, the simple answer is; it's complicated, but maybe it's not. You see, most think tanks study and do research on issues facing the mankind and the crisis of the constant flowing human endeavor. Thus, they, much like we, focus on Education, Transportation, Energy, Distribution, Health, Military Defense, Language, Economics, Water, Diplomacy, Government, Business, Art, Space, Technology ... trying to help. You see, as one Sci Fi author once noted; "humans are mostly dangerous to themselves" otherwise they are "mostly harmless" - and so, it makes sense to worry about national defense against those who would choose to disrupt all we are and all we've built. So, any think tank in my opinion that is worth its salt ought to be working on that, plus one or more of the items above. Why? Well, because as much as humans love their sound and fury, while claiming to dream of utopia, those are indeed the pressing issues of our present period ...

Teaching Economics and History - Greece's Economy Today and Ancient Greek Life

... who voted for more social services and entitlements would have known that the money does not grow on trees, that it must come from somewhere, and the needless borrowing and printing of money is about the worst thing you can do for an economy. One of the things that our think tank came up with is that maybe rather than teaching economic history of the United States, because those history books have been so watered down with political correctness, making FDR out to be a hero for instance, they would serve no purpose in the lesson of fiscally responsible government - is that ... Recently, our think tank which happens to operate online was discussing the need to teach economics in our schools. The reason being is that we need an educated electorate, which is well schooled in economics if we ever hope or expect them to vote for a fiscally responsible government. It seems people don't ...

2012 Federal Budget and the Federal Aviation Administration

... this topic. The article was titled; "Air Traffic System Update Encountered Turbulence" by Jad Mouawad and posted for print on April 1, 2011 (but it was no joke). Perhaps, after reading this article you can understand why this topic became a point of interest at our Think Tank which happens to operate online. Barack Obama Closing School as Education in the US is Self-Destructing

... sending me this news, and our follow-up dialogues and said; "I think I'll do an article on this. Thanks," which led me to write this piece. Still, it's all part of a much bigger picture isn't it? Sure it is, we have a terrible problem with education in this country and nothing really seems to be working - and I think everyone knows it too. Yes, this is a controversial topic, but it is one we discuss rather often at our think tank. So, sound off with any comments, questions, and or concerns you might have in this venue. Think on it. ... figure out that we have a problem with education in the US and whereas, it isn't as bad as folks claim, it's also not as good as it could be either. So, rather than condemning our schools, laying off teachers, and closing some perhaps we need to re-think our schools going forward in the age of instant information. Is the Obama Administration doing that? Well, they are trying, I can agree with that. Nature Can Be Unforgiving - Sun and Solar Storms Challenge NextGen Satellite ATC

... during solar maximum phases? Sure, those are issues. Now what happens if this reliable Sun of ours, part of nature as we know it causes a solar flare so big it takes out our communication satellites, and electronics - not good right? Well, not long ago, our think tank was discussing this issue with a fellow think tanker type, Troy Laclaire. Troy was worried about a solar flare taking out the FAA's NextGen air traffic control satellite system, and stated; "Thinking more on this, I have to wonder, what is going to happen during a severe solar storm and satellites get knocked out ... have a backup system." Well, the airplanes can all revert back to Unicom and the pilots announce their positions to each other, and then watch like a hawk for other traffic, and fly the proper routes, but it adds another layer of uncertainty, and guaranteed delays too. Troy stated; "I Think I would trust a ground based system a little bit better." Indeed, but of course, that's not always possible. The satellite system is better as long as it always works, but remember; security, and 100% up time is what we seek here right? Mother Nature will do its thing ...

Workplace Safety in Extreme Environments Considered

... with 200-300 passengers and there are wind shears, wake turbulence, and wing-tip vortices all interacting. Yes, things get pretty serious, pretty quickly, and thus you need to stay heads-up and be hyper vigilant. The other day, I was discussing airport operations and aviation safety with a fellow think tank type, Troy Laclaire. We were discussing potential devices to detect wind turbulence, either man-made or from the natural environment. I made mention of an idea I had, a new concept to detect wake turbulence using the Sun as the background with a little trick of optical physics. Troy indicated ... stability?" Indeed, yes, why not, material memory, morphing, new materials - it's all 100% doable! And so I asked exactly what he had in mind. He reasoned that there are a lot of potential possibilities there, provided that the materials can be made to work the way you want. I think one route, would be to base the wings of the plane where they are similar to how feathers are layered on birds, where you have millions of small pieces with individual movement capabilities. This would allow for multiple possible different shapes. Yes, and the aircraft could counteract the wake turbulence ...
