Leadership Must Sell Ideas
... It has often been said that everything in life involves selling of some sort, either the sale of a product or of some service. A basic necessity of effective leadership is that a leader must be able to sell his ideas, first to himself, then to members, donors, sponsors, etc..., including past, current or potential individuals falling into those categories. One of the major obstacles to effective leadership is far too many individuals seem too concerned with receiving the credit, and often don't take a stand because of fear of ... credit, and often don't take a stand because of fear of being blamed, or someone else stepping in and claiming an idea as theirs. Howard Aiken wrote, "Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats." Mr. Aiken superbly summed up a situation that occurs often, where the old, rehashed safe ideas, even if not very successful, are generally the one's most people continuously bring up.
