The King's Speech - Movie Review

... tries unsuccessfully with several speech therapists and gives it up. The pragmatic Duchess persuades him to see Lionel Logue, an un-conventional Australian speech therapist. Lionel gets informal with the prince and their conversations and sessions become intriguing as the movie moves forward. Their patchy and at times unstable friendship is really touching and is a major driving force in the movie. After the death of King George V and his elder brother's scandalous abdication the prince becomes King George VI reluctantly. But soon, his stutter raises concerns over his leadership skills. The nation at brink of a war needed a ...

Hanna (2011 Review)

... element of the film. The music is riveting, rhythmic, and it carries you to the gun slinging and fist throwing world of Hanna within seconds of listening. It's been quite a while since I've actually seen the movie, but I still find myself drawn toward hunting down the various music tracks that I inevitably put on repeat. Overall, this movie was well cast and while the end result could have been executed with better writing and toned editing, Joe Wright brings a pulsing palette of action and mystery that the imagination can cling to, if only for a couple hours ...

Ghajini Movie Review - Watch the Sheer Contrast in Aamir's Character

... there is a fist fight. Really guns have no role to play in Bollywood. After all our heroes for decades have won fights and hearts of the heroines definitely not by guns! Aamir Khan's Acting in Ghajini Coming back to Ghajini or should I say Aamir Khan because the movie is after all about him. He has been able to strike a balance between the two characters that he plays-each so different from the other. Each expression-love, anger, confusion and above all the intensity in his eyes for revenge keeps you spellbound. To say that it is one ... he plays-each so different from the other. Each expression-love, anger, confusion and above all the intensity in his eyes for revenge keeps you spellbound. To say that it is one of his best performances till date would be putting it mildly. So to answer the question if the movie has a happy ending-well how about watching the movie and judging it for yourself? Love, as most people would agree, is not about who won but, whether love won. GhajiniRating: 4/5 Ghajini Cast: Aamir Khan, Asin, Jiah Khan Ghajini Genre: Action / Romance / Thriller / Suspense Ghajini Director: A.R. Murugadoss

Hot Fuzz

... hits the fan. Nick Frost plays Danny Butterman, the action film super-fan that wants to be a "real" cop, like those he sees in movies. Frost, as Danny, is a childish goofball, and plays off Pegg's character very well. Eventually, with the help of Danny and his massive movie collection and the eerie secret of the small town, Angel morphs into a fiery beast of biblical badassery. There are two very notable stars that join the cast: Paddy Considine and Timothy Dalton. Considine plays one of the Andys, and he shows off his comedic chops rather well as the ...

Ben Affleck Movies

... as an actor. Too often movie reviews of my favorite Ben Affleck movies focus too much on all the little things. If you pick apart any movie it is easy to find flaws. As a fan of Ben, though, I like to just sit back and enjoy the movie. That is probably why my movie reviews are so positive. I am not looking for fault. I am just basking in the amazing talents of this wonderful actor. A few of my favorite Ben Affleck movies are from his early career. I mean, most people agree that Good Will Hunting is a classic movie. It is no surprise ... . That was a tear-jerker and no matter how many times I watch it I am crying like a baby by the end. However, in recent years, Ben hasn't slowed down. Some of my favorite Ben Affleck movies of this decade include the legendary film, Pearl Harbor and the movie that showed off a whole other side of the actor, Daredevil. Ben was quoted as saying Daredevil was his favorite childhood superhero and that he took the role because it was important to him that the character was portrayed correctly. My list of favorite Ben Affleck movies would not be ...

Movie Review: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold (2011)

... movies. The plot of The Greatest Film Ever Sold is actually quite satirical - it's a documentary about branding, advertising and product placement that is financed through brands, advertising and product placement. As Spurlock meets with various companies and potential sponsors, he explains that his wishes are to make a movie about how people make movies through the use of brand inclusion (or "selling out" as many artists tend to describe an act of trading creative incorruptibility for easy money). At first, no one seems interested in investing. His "brand collateral," or the elements that make him appealing to advertisers, is ... to flesh out the process of gaining further sponsors, expose the deceptive nature of advertising, flip interviewers on their ears, and scrutinize the process of designing poster art and theatrical trailers. The documentary starts strong, loses a little steam when it explores the necessary steps for Spurlock to advertise his movie to the world, and finally ends strong with egregious product placement and hilarious spoof commercials. The major concern of his advertisers is how their product will be perceived by viewers - needless to say, no one is free from mockery. Even when items are not badmouthed openly, the irony behind his ...

Movie Review: Scream 4 (2011)

... the bandwagon, it finally fixes many of the problems that plagued the first two sequels. Pretty girls still get menacing phone calls from raspy-voiced strangers followed by brutal stabbings, but this time out the self-reflective comedy adopts a savvier approach by implementing both self-mockery and general horror movie parody without sole reliance on grating gurus spouting spoilers and pointless speculation. Perhaps much of its strength lies in the platform and history created by its predecessors, but all the pieces seem to be better streamlined. Scream 4 accomplishes what the previous films tried so desperately to create - a horror ... without sole reliance on grating gurus spouting spoilers and pointless speculation. Perhaps much of its strength lies in the platform and history created by its predecessors, but all the pieces seem to be better streamlined. Scream 4 accomplishes what the previous films tried so desperately to create - a horror movie that knows when to laugh at itself. Ten years have passed since the infamous "Woodsboro murders" and survivor Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) returns to her hometown to promote her new self-help book. Her arrival also marks the anniversary of the original killings and when two teenagers are found butchered ...

... corruption. Eventually, Lucas's successes of being a crime and drug king catches up with him as he watches his empire fall apart. To save himself from a heavy prison sentence he must do the unthinkable. Fallen has received numerous positive movie reviews. This is a movie that will appeal to audiences who enjoy the supernatural as well as crime dramas. The movie begins with detective John Hobbes, played by Denzel Washington. He has received recognition for capturing psychopath and serial killer Edgar Reese. Reese has been sentenced to death row and everyone thinks that the killing is over. But once it's time ...

Movie Review: Thor (2011)

... quality. The Stranger in a Strange Land motif is fun, but Thor ultimately suffers from having too many separate ideas, including an Avengers subplot, several villains, a legion of heroes, a love interest, and decades of comic book backstory crammed into a single film. It's as if The Avengers movie is so important and universally anticipated that each comic book member needs to have their own feature-length theatrical flick rushed to theaters before the entire world gathers together for the slated 2012 release - a project that is likely to suffer from a similar problem: too many characters and not ... Portman) as well as a new battle to fight - first against government agency S.H.I.E.L.D. and then with a soulless destroyer whose sole mission is to ensure he never returns home. The creators of Thor are misguidedly under the impression that everyone watching this new superhero movie is a fan not only of the comics, but also the other Marvel entities, as well as the previous Marvel movies. This is one piece of the puzzle that leads to The Avengers theatrical adaptation (stay through the end credits for another tidbit), and plenty of the running time is ...

Paul - Movie Review

... to droll on to a slight degree at moments. Though the characters are likable and the cast soon patch things over with their comedic content to keep things rolling along. Despite its slight shortcomings, Paul does indeed provide several laughs and some good entertainment. While possibly slightly generic/bland, the movie is a fun ride and one that will surely please any Pegg or Frost fans while also making sci-fi nerds a bit giddy over the inside jokes/references. For any fan of this pair's previous two movies, Paul may not end up being your favorite of the three ... you, the chemistry is unharmed and Rogen fits it plenty well enough. With his rude manners and quips, Paul is something of a lovable little pot-smoking, crude, excessively-cussing alien. Think of him like E.T. but for your younger adult crowd. He provides plenty of laughter throughout the movie along with Pegg and Frost. The back and forth between the three provide plenty of funny moments that make this an entertaining adventure. If I have one problem with the Paul character, it's a picky one. Paul is voiced straight up by Rogen. Meaning there's no voice done ...

Best Worst Movie - A Documentary

... think that this must be a good documentary. As many of you know I switched to Netflix and cancelled our Blockbuster account when my local Blockbuster store closed...anyway. The movie came in the mail last week from Netflix but we didn't get around to it until last night. Best Worst Movie is a documentary about Troll 2, a horror movie made twenty years ago. It has been labeled as the worst movie in the world. The label is probably correct, however, as with all movies there are usually a few fans. Troll 2 is no different. Over the course of the last ... , went straight to VHS tape and quickly forgotten - or so he thought. Almost two decades later and without any manufacturing by Hollywood, the movie garnered a pretty hefty and surreal fan base. We meet all the actors and how they were embarrassed to admit they were in the movie - to them signing autographs and giving speeches at screenings across the country. People love this movie - and I mean love! I still don't know why but we all have that one movie that speaks to us - no matter how bad it was. I have one - Xanadu (Hey, don't laugh - I was ten when ...

Movie Review: Kill the Irishman (2011)

... based on a true story, which immediately notifies the audience that creative liberties will be generously taken. A rather impressive collaboration of regular gangster actors show up for Kill the Irishman, including Christopher Walken, Robert Davi, Vinnie Jones, Paul Sorvino, Mike Starr, and Steve Schirripa. Many of them give the movie a decidedly authentic feel, paired with a believable assortment of props and costumes. The problem with having so many convincing mobsters is that when actors unaccustomed to playing a hood step onscreen, they're painfully obvious. In Cleveland in the 1960s, Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson, delivering a largely expressionless, monotonic ... , plenty of montages and initial glamorization of the mafia, it fails with the storytelling and the cast. More supporting actors are believable over the leads, (the most offensive overacting and underacting comes from Vincent D'Onofrio, Tony Lo Bianco and Laura Ramsey) and the action, suspense and tone of the movie are as flat as Stevenson's inflectionless dialogue.

Movie Review: Source Code (2011)

... multiple timelines, director Duncan Jones forgot to stay true to the very ideas he was developing, instead opening up a can of worms when including the video game-like qualities of choosing your own path, encountering different endings, and seeing through the eyes of a compatible, customizable character. While the movie can easily be compared to other similarly themed sci-fi films (12 Monkeys meets Groundhog Day meets Inception meets The Manchurian Candidate meets Robocop, with even a touch of Alfred Hitchcock - with the opening title sequence and music), the closest comparison for Source Code is that of a first-person ... to the truth, he begins to question the circumstances surrounding his own involvement with Source Code, and as he races to save innocent lives he must attempt to save his own. Source Code proves, stickily and confusingly, that time travel is not an easy subject to undertake when making a movie. What starts as a relatively interesting slice of science-fiction fused with a murder mystery (not unlike 2006's Déjà Vu), quickly turns into a disarranged mess of ill explained nonsense and abundant plot holes. The definitions of Source Code involve such jargon as "parallel calculus" and "quantum mechanics ...

Tumble Down the Rabbit Hole

Based on a play by David Lindsay-Abaire, Rabbit Hole is one of those films where big stars play regular people. They scream, they shout, they cry and they smile like everyone else and before you know they manage to seep into your system and completely engross you. Becca (Nicole Kidman) and Howie (Aaron Eckhart) are pale shadows of what they used to be since the accidental death of their young son, Danny. Becca cuts herself off completely and spends most of her time gardening while Howie almost ritualistically goes along the days. This is their way of dealing with the loss and the twain meet at their weekly therapy group. Becca looses interest in the therapy and starts following around the ...

Movie Review: Arthur (2011)

... is the same: Brand attempts his own version of Dudley Moore, Mirren succeeds at playing Gielgud, and Gerwig doesn't even try to be Liza Minnelli. The love story and predicaments are identical, making the entire ordeal a distraction - seeing the same characters act out the same situations from another movie. The themes of maturing, recognizing the power of love over money, and familial independence are still present and equally enjoyably examined, as well as the involvement of tear-jerking tragedy amongst lighthearted antics. But there are no real improvements, and almost no major differences (Brand does strip down to his ...

... can compete against the modern warfare of the CIA. At least the playgrounds for action and adventure are fitting, even if the music, mostly created by The Chemical Brothers (except for the classical "In the Hall of the Mountain King," most recently heard in The Social Network and The Greatest Movie Ever Sold) gets in the way of clever presentation.

Movie Review: Fast Five (2011)

... during the opening moments, in which a bus flips over a dozen times and is smashed beyond recognition, a news reporter chronicles how, quite surprisingly, none of the 30-some inmates on board were killed. From here we're granted all the basic components of a Fast and the Furious movie, from amplified revving engines, to dust-churning/asphalt-burning tires, to close-ups of lift kits and snarling wheels, to street racing, to bare midriffs. Tied into the generic formula is the new, incredibly complex heist scheme, along with the corrupt Brazilian official and his obligatory moments of demonstrating his ...

Just Go With It Movie Review

There are some films that are beyond a remake for they have an ageless quality attached to them. And then there are some whose ageless quality is the very reason that prompts a remake and Cactus Flower is one of those unlucky ones. No matter how hard one tries, it's almost impossible to imagine Adam Sandler fitting into Walter Mathau's shoes, but then this isn't a perfect world. Just Go With It Plot Ideal as the world might not be sometimes there's an unexpected surprise that Danny (Adam Sandler) has been lying about a bad marriage in order to impress women all his adult life but when he meets the one his lie ends up complicating everything. In order to be sure that she isn't the reason ...

Thank You Movie Review

Thank You isn't a film. It's a template that has been done to death by the likes of Anees Bazmee, Indra Kumar and David Dhawan. It's one of those exercises that have a few laughs, a handful of somewhat funny instances, loads of nonsensical moments coupled with inane songs and mostly bad acting. The only good thing that can come out of viewing Thank You is that you might end up exercising your brain cells to recall the previous instances where you were tortured with the same banality. Thank You Plot Three philandering husbands (Irrfan, Suniel Shetty and Bobby Deol) work in the same business of selling luxury yachts and end up covering each other's affairs from their unsuspecting wives (Rimi ...
