Myth - Wasp Spray Instead Of Pepper Spray - BUSTED!

It has been suggested by some self proclaimed personal-defense "experts" that you should use Wasp Spray in place of Pepper Spray. This couldn't be further from the truth and let's explore why;

  • Wasp spray is a pesticide, and federal law prohibits its use in "any manner inconsistent with its labeling" So simply by implying that you should use it as a self defense tool, you would be in violation of federal statutes.

  • Many states actually prohibit the use of any substance for self protection that is not specifically authorized for that purpose. So there would be state law violations as well.

  • The active ingredient in Pepper Spray is capsicum, which is an oil extracted from the hottest of peppers. It by nature is an inflammatory and WILL cause irritation to the eyes, lungs, skin and respiratory system making it difficult for an attacker to see or breathe as well as experiencing a strong burning sensation to the skin. It will work to some degree on everyone, even those resistant to pain.

  • Wasp Spray consists of one or more insecticides like pyrethrum or propoxur. If you read the precautions on a can of Wasp Spray it does indicate irritation to the eyes and lungs, because they are in fact irritants and their effects are meant to be toxic to insects. They will probably not stop a pain resistant individual from continuing their attack on you.

  • Another strong argument used by supporters of this myth is that the wasp spray will keep you safer because they can shoot farther distance then traditional pepper spray. Sure the can of wasp spray will shoot 20 feet or more, but if it is not going to effectively stop your attacker it's virtually useless no matter how far it sprays. Modern day pepper spray canisters will shoot anywhere from 8 - 25 feet and will stop your attacker. Can you see the logic in carrying anything but actual pepper spray?

  • To the best of my recollection, there have been no actual tests or even documentation of how well Wasp Spray, or any other pesticide will work in a self defense setting and in my opinion, with the advancements in pepper spray technology as well as the many different easily concealable designs of the canisters, pepper spray wins this comparison hands down.

Pepper spray is legal in all fifty states, however there are some restrictions in certain cities regarding strength, and place of purchase so check your local laws before you actually buy pepper spray. Wasp spray for defense on the other hand is untested and using it knowingly to defend yourself or someone else can violate many federal, state and even local statutes. Why risk your safety, and why risk placing yourself or your family in greater harm by listening to those who regurgitate information, but are very short on the knowledge, experience and credentials to back up their claims.
