The first danger you open yourself to, by hiring people without conducting background checks on them first is that of ending up employing people with criminal histories. Now it is true that people with criminal histories have been known to reform completely. Indeed, having a criminal record should, ideally, not be an automatic basis for you not hire a person. But, at the very least, you should know about the history, and be in a position to interrogate whether the person in question has totally reformed or not. That will be very hard to do, if you go about hiring without conducting background checks. Moreover, should you hire people with such criminal records, and should crime actually end up being committed in your business on this account, you could find yourself being held responsible. You would be termed as having been careless, by way of hiring people without subjecting them to background checks. You could possibly end up in a situation where, for instance, an insurance company fails to take liability for some situations on this account only.

The second danger you open yourself to, is that of ending up hiring people with poor employment histories. There are people who are known to be nuisances to employers. But how will you get to learn if your prospective employees are in that category, if you don't conduct any sort of background investigation before hiring anyone?

The third danger you open yourself to, by employing people without conducting background checks on them is that of ending up hiring people who are not properly qualified. In the course of a background investigation, you get independent verification of a person's qualifications. The fourth danger you open yourself to, by employing people without conducting background investigations on them, is that of ending up hiring people with a tendency towards financial impropriety. That would be risky in some situations, like where you are hiring such people to be accountants or managers. It is in the course of a proper background check that you would get to know of the person's previous bankruptcies, as well as the person's credit history, which is usually a reasonably good indicator of the person's financial propriety.
