Searching for Information About an Ontario Company Such as Directors and Officers

January 29, 2012 - Is there an Ontario company that you wish to find out information about such as the names of the officers and directors? Are you wanting to find out the official address of a company and who the President of the Company is?

The name of the document the Ontario government will give you is called an Ontario Corporate Profile Report. You can also order the same report under the name of corporate search or a company search.

Be sure not to mistake this report to be with respect to a sole proprietorship or a partnership registered in Ontario. In order to obtained information about those types of businesses you must do what is called an Ontario Business Names Search.

The report will indicate the following (1) registered office of the company, (2) the names and addresses of the directors, (3) the names, titles and addresses of the officers, and (4) a list of all filings made on behalf of the company including articles of amendment, notices of change, annual return filings, etc.

A company search is provided by the provincial and territorial governments and each jurisdiction has its own search system for that province or territory.

The owners of an Ontario company are considered to be private information and are not recorded on the public record. Lots of time where there is only one director and officer listed on the Corporate Profile report, that person is also the owners. If a company has many directors and officers listed on the Corporate Profile Report this would probably not be the case.

There will be a box on the Ontario Corporate Profile Report which says yes or no. This box indicates whether there are any business names registered on behalf of the company but it does not tell you what those names are. If the report says yes to there being business names you will need to then order an additional report called an Ontario Business Names Report so that you can get a list of all the names.

If the actual company name has been different in the past you will be able to find out all the names that the company has ever had.

These searches are called corporate searches, company searches, corporate profile reports. Each province or territory has its own name. Many different searches appear to be similar in name so it is a good idea to be sure of what you want to order.
