Essential Tips to Care for Your Hot Tub Properly
Whether you own an indoor hot tub or an outdoor hot tub, proper care of the tub will prolong its life. Here are some tips on caring for hot tubs and some considerations to bear in mind when looking to keep things at top quality.
When first installing your tub, make sure it's placed on a level surface. Also, make sure that the surface can sustain the weight of the tub, water and people. If it's an outdoor style, consider placing it where it will have some shelter from the elements.
When your unit isn't being used, make sure it's covered. Most come with a thermal cover. Not only does the cover keep debris out, it also helps keep the heat in.
One of the key areas of care is making sure your sanitizer level is at the recommended level as outlined in your manual. It's important to sanitize your pool, reducing the growth of algae and bacteria. Otherwise, the water can become contaminated and cause illness. For most tubs, typically chlorine or bromine are used as sanitizers. Some tubs now use ozone and ionizer sanitizers. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully and keep all sanitizers out of reach of young children.
Next, you'll want to maintain the pH levels, the acidity of the water. A tub's pH rang should be between 7.2 and 8.0. Use a spa strip to test your water. The lower the pH level, the more acidic your tub water is. However, a high pH level can corrode the metal parts of your tub and cause stains. It's important to use a non-soap cleaner to clean the water line. Otherwise, bacteria and algae will possibly starting growing.
Once every month or two months, remove the water filter cartridge and give it a good cleaning. Begin by spraying the cartridge with your water hose. Then soak it for a few hours in a bucket with a cartridge cleaner. If you don't keep the filter cartridge clean, then eventually it will cause the flow of water to drastically slow down which will greatly impact the enjoyment of your tub.
At least once or twice a year, drain the tub and clean it with the supplies recommended in your manual. Then refill the tub.
Maintaining hot tubs is fairly simple. If you following these steps and maintain your tub regularly, you should be able to enjoy your hot tub for many years to come.
