Headphones for Kids - What Do You Need to Know?

What should you look for when looking to purchase headphones for children? Are there any real significant differences between kids' headphones and adult headphones? This article will help you answer those questions and will give an incite into the world of headphones, helping you look beyond the brand name.

When considering the safety of a pair of headphones it should be remembered that the headphones themselves won't cause any damage, but the person controlling the noise levels can cause the damage. This sounds like an obvious statement, but the fact of the matter is that you are more likely to cause damage to the ear drum by listening to music on full volume for longer than 5 minutes than hours of listening at 70% volume, for example. With this in mind, it is important that children's headphones have a volume control feature and are noise-cancelling.

It is often the case that when a headphone user can hear external noise whilst wearing headphones, that they will increase the sound volume. If the headphones were 'noise-cancelling' then external noises are drowned out and the sound quality will be just as good at 70% noise volume. Despite noise-cancelling headphones generally costing more than conventional headphones, the benefits certainly outweigh the price and should definitely be considered if you have a child that loves music and will use headphones on a regular basis.

The weight of headphones can vary. Stylish DJ headphones are weightier than the smaller lightweight counterparts, so be sure as to the weight of the headphones. A photo with a child wearing bulky headphones may look 'cool' on first impression, yet if you're going to spend £50 quid on headphones, you will want them to be worn more than the odd couple of times.

Most electronics companies have partnership with Chinese factories to produce the latest technologies at the best price. This being said, many brands purchase 'moulds' and stamp their brand on them. So don't be fooled that you are buying the best brand, as many other brands have the same mould in other designs and often considerably cheaper too. So do your research before hand, as after all, if you're after kids headphones then the chances of the breaking or being forgotten are quite high.

I could go on with a long list of differences between kids headphones and headphones worn by adults, yet the only real factors that need considering are the weight, the noise cancelling issue, volume control and the design. Design not previously mentioned, as it is quite obvious. Not seen many adults walking down the street wearing Peppa Pig headphones!
