Search engine giant Google defines genealogy as the investigation or study of family history or ancestry. The term was derived from the Greek word genea, which means generation, and logos, which means knowledge.

Basically, genealogy allows every person to trace their kins and clans from their mother and father side. Through this we get to know who are grandparents, great grandparents, and great, great, great, grandparents. We might even come to a point that we will be surprise that a particular person whom we do not think to be part of our clan is our distant relative.
