Home Candle Making: How to Do It and Why It's So Fun

Home candle making is a hobby that is fun for the whole family. A great thing about it is that it can be done with almost any budget and in just an hour or so of time. This makes it an incredibly popular hobby and past time for people all over the place. To add to this, you are also going to be saving money as it is far more cost efficient to make your own candles then it is to go buy them. Think about it, when was the last time that you were at a boutique or a store and you bought a nice candle. Sure it smells good and it looks pretty but think about how much you paid for it. You can beautiful candles at home with whatever scents and colors that you want.

What I am going to teach you today is how to make a candle with three layers and three different colors. This is easy to do and very fun as well. Here is a list of the different candle making supplies that you are going to need for your home candle making.

Colors ( You are going to want three different colors, pick whatever you want but I suggest you make them all match. For example you can choose green, blue, and white. Now this is a suggestion but of course it is your candle so make it whatever you want.)

Fragrance ( Once again I recommend that you choose three different scents and make sure that they all go well with each other. I use oils when I make scents and I suggest that you do the same as it is very easy. Try to make the fragrance in three notes, a high note, which is something sweet, a middle note, which is something that is a bit stronger, and base note, something that is strong and heavy.)

Wax

Carving Knife

Thermometer

Double Boiler

A Mold ( You are going to need three of these, each one larger in width then the other but all the same height. For example you can use a soda can, then an energy drink can, then a coffee can. As long as they are all the same height, or at least a height that you can work with, then you are all good.

Wick and wick tab ( The wick tab is great at keeping the wick centered, out of all of the candle making supplies I find the wick tabs with the wicks already attached to them are the best as far as convenience goes.)

Alright now you are ready! Here we go!

Step # 1. Prepare your molds, If you are cutting soda cans then be safe as you do not want to cut yourself. You are going to want to make sure that the molds are clean and dry. Spray some vegetable oil in them or simply whip them with olive oil in order to make sure that the wax does not stick to the mold when it dries.

Step # 2. So your molds are ready, ready for the next step in home candle making? Fill the bottom pan of the double boiler with water and put it on the stove top with low heat. As you are waiting for the water to coil you are going to want to cut some of the wax in to the top pan. Place the top pan on the bottom pan and wait for the wax to begin melting.

Step # 3. Use your thermometer to check the temperature of the wax, it should melt at 150 degrees. Remember to stir often.

Step # 4. When the wax is melted then take the time to add one of the fragrances and one of the colors. This is going to be the center of the candle so you may want to make this the darkest color and the heaviest scent. Mix it all together well.

Step # 5. Now in the thinnest of the molds make sure that you prepared it with the oil and that the wick is in place. Now pour the wax in to it, take your time and move slow as you do not want to burn yourself.

Step # 6. You are done for now. Put the mold in a safe area where it is not going to be disturbed by pets and children. Leave it there for 24 hours.

Step # 7. So you have waited 24 hours, now what you are going to want to do is turn the mold upside down and shake the candle out, because you used the oil the candle should slide out easily. Now if you want you can always stop here, you have just completed home candle making. However if you want the three layered, three scented candle then proceed on to the next step.

Step # 8. Now what you are going to do is repeat steps # 1 through # 6. When You do this you should use the second darkest color and the second strongest fragrance as this is going to be the middle layer. The only difference that is going to take place is as follows. You are going to use the second largest mold and put the candle that you already made in to the center of it. When the wax that you have just made is all melted and prepared with the scents and the color that you want then take your time and pour it in to the mold. Pour it all around the other candle. Now once again put it to the side and leave it for 24 hours.

Step # 9. So, 24 hours have passed. You can either stop here and have a two layered, double scented candle, or you can go further on in the home candle making process. If you want to go on then simply follow steps # 1. through # 6. The difference is however that when you melt the wax that you add the lightest color and the lightener scent. When the wax is melted prepare the largest mold with the oil and place your two layered candle inside of it. Once again pour the wax in to the mold all around the candle. Put it to the side for 24 hours and there you are! You are all done! You just made a three layered candle! How is that for home candle making?
