Joining a Network Marketing Company - Do Your Research Before You Dive In

700,000 people look at starting their own network marketing business every month. That is an astonishing number but what is more incredible is that 79 million people will do this annually. Both of those figures are just in the United States. One can only imagine what the global figures are. 75% of those people do not do any type of research on the company that they are about to hand over money to in order to get started. I believe that this is the reason that home based businesses and network marketing companies are being labeled as taboo. If everyone would just take a little bit of their time and do some research on the company prior to signing up, situations would be a lot better and there would be some lawyers out of work.

So, what kind of research do you do on the company? What if the company is one of those "ground breaking opportunities" that does not have a track record? Where do you go to find information about how the company operates and who the officers are? Do you have to acquire any type of special license in order to sell the products and services? What are the products and services? How do you get paid and what is the compensation plan? These are all legitimate questions that you should be asking yourself prior to handing over any money or signing on any dotted lines.

The research that you should do on the company will be solely up to you. The top network marketing companies have designed their business presentations so that you will be well informed and have been given enough information in order to make a decision. During the presentation you should be taking notes of items that you have questions on or that have may not been explained well enough for you to understand. Try to get these questions answered by the company representatives and write those answers down. Get on the internet and search for the answers to your questions there and compare the two. You may have to go to several different sites in order to get other opinions. During the presentation you should have made note of who the officers of the company were. Simply type their name into the search engine of your choice. Scroll through all of the results and do some research on those individuals.

Just as you did with the individual search, you can do the same thing with the company name. In your search of the company you will want to find out how long the company has been in business, if there are any judgments (both civil and criminal) against the company and whether or not the company is listed on the Online Better Business Bureau. If you want to have the most successful business that you can then I suggest that you stay away from a company that has less than an 18 month track record. I am not saying that these companies are to be completely avoided but companies with a track record of less than 2 years may or may not survive. I understand that every company has to start out somewhere but some of these companies have been designed with the strict intention of taking your money and running.

Some network marketing companies will require you to pay for and acquire your own specialty license. Having this license will be a must for you in order to sell or get commissions from the products and services. Unless you are into paying for and getting a bunch of licenses, I would avoid this type of business.

I think that one of the most important aspects of any network marketing business is the products. The products are going to be something that you will have to believe in and have the ability to use. In order to become successful you must become a product of the product. There are hundreds upon hundreds of new entrepreneurs that just try to sell the products and not use them themselves. This is why they are not successful. There is no way that you can brand yourself with the product if you don't use them so make sure that it is something that you can use. Another aspect of the products is the commissions that you will be paid for the sales. You need to get established with a company that has high end and high profit products. It makes no sense to become affiliated with a company that has thousands of different products that only pay you single to double digit commissions. With the high end products you will make triple and quadruple digit commissions that will allow you to focus more time on your marketing and advertising.

The absolute most important factor of a company to research is their compensation plan. The top network marketing companies will have had made their compensation plan public information. This proves that they have nothing to hide and they are the most legitimate. The compensation plan should definitely be a part of the business presentation. It must clearly define the commissions of each and every product and whether or not you will make commissions from multiple levels of you down line. The compensation plan should clearly define what is and what is not commissionable. The industry top companies will have everything and I mean everything commissionable.

As you can see, there are many aspects of network marketing companies that you must research. Do you due diligence by researching any opportunity that is presented. This is the only way that you can protect yourself from being taken advantage of or scammed out of your hard earned money. As I stated previously, there are plenty of legitimate opportunities out there, but it is the people that join these network marketing companies not doing their research that gives the whole industry a bad name.
